If you are looking for a inexpensive and fun place to take your kids, look no further than the Como Zoo and Conservatory in St Paul, MN!

The Como Zoo is free to go to, but does suggest a donation of $2-4 per person. I would plan for 2-3 hours to go here. There is lots of parking available that is no charge. We like to arrive when they first open, or the last 2 hours before they close. I have never had an issue with parking. If you are going on a Saturday afternoon, the parking is going to be a little more tricky though. There is a shuttle bus that runs Fridays-Sundays in the summer, which could be a good option as well.

In the summer months Como Town is open which offers rides for smaller kids and a splash pad. There is a charge for this area, but worth it if your kids like to go on rides. Last summer they had a Dinosaur exhibit which was fun! There is a beautiful Carousel that was up and running in late October. It’s $4 to go on it, but be aware that if the weather is too cold, it can’t operate (below 45 degrees).

We always have to go and see our penguin friends of course! This is a smaller zoo, so I think it’s great for younger kids to walk through and babies in strollers will do better with the shorter time. There are many benches to sit on, bathrooms throughout the zoo, and stops for food and snacks. Bringing a packed lunch is allowed as well, so the zoo is the perfect place for a picnic. The grounds are stroller and wheelchair accessible and easy to get around. Most animals are close by so kids can see each exhibit. The animals here include: Monkeys, Gorillas, Zebras, Giraffes, Tigers, Lions, Polar Bears, Penguins, Seals, Flamingos, and many more!

Check their daily schedule of events. These programs are included with your visit. No extra amount to pay. I highly suggest seeing the Sparky Show! It’s a very cute and funny seal show at Como Habor and the area was renovated a couple years ago. Great seating and easy to see the show! They have 2 shows per day.

Once you get through seeing all the animals, there are beautiful gardens to explore. This may not be my kids favorite area, but I love walking around and seeing the tropical flowers. The sunken garden changes their flower displays depending on the season. It’s no wonder they host weddings through-out the year. There is a small play area for kids before you get to the gardens and don’t miss the gift shop! It has many interesting and cool items 🙂

We found a wishing fountain!

Overall, Como Zoo is a must see if you are in the Twin Cities area! If you are looking for an inexpensive and fun place to take your kids, this is it! The Como Zoo has many events and programs to offer, so check ahead at the daily schedule. They do not require online tickets, just show up! The grounds surrounding the zoo are always nice with many bike and walking trails, picnic tables, and a playground. Enjoy and make some memories! 🙂
