Dogman is one of my kids favorite books! My son wanted to dress as Lil Petey for Book Character Day at school. The thing is…. there are no costumes for Lil Petey. Time to create in my craft room 🙂
You will need:
Plain orange shirt (this can be found at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or Target)
Piece of cardboard
Black fabric paint (2 oz Tulip brand from Michaels $4.99)
Paintbrush
Blue Painters tape
Lil Petey hat from Etsy
Orange pants or black pants
*Optional to add black cape so Lil Petey can become Cat Kid*
Place the blue painters tape in even rows across the orange shirt. Put a piece of cardboard in the shirt to seperate the front and back. This protects the paint from leaking through the other side.

Paint black stripes onto the shirt. I did 2 coats.

After 2 coats are applied, I let it dry for about 20 minutes before I pulled the tape off. I also think you could make the blacks strips with vinyl and a cricut and it would turn out nicely. I would have liked a shiny finish as opposed to the matte finish from the paint.

I found this adorable Lil Petey hat on Etsy! $16 by HookedbyJedovi
You could also buy a plain orange hat, add some ears, and paint Lil Petey’s face onto it.

Optional to add a black cape so Lil Petey can become Cat Kid! We had a black cape with a Batman logo on the back (from another costume). I just flipped it around so the batman logo was on the inside and it was plain black on the outside 🙂

It was very hard to find orange pants to add to this costume. I wish I had ordered them on Amazon! I could not find them anywhere! If I had orange pants, I would just continue the black stripes onto the pants. Since the orange pants did not happen, he wore black pants and that turned out looking great! 🙂
Happy Book Character Day!
