I read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to my boys and they loved it so much! When it was time to decide a costume for “Book Character Day” at school, my son chose Willy Wonka without hesitation. I needed to help him make his costume, but where to start?

You will need:
Black Top Hat (I found this one at Walmart for $6 in the Halloween section)
Glue gun and glue sticks
Wonka bar & Golden ticket image from Pinterest (print on cardstock)
Images of candy (print on cardstock)
Purple Ribbon

Start with the black top hat and add purple ribbon around it. Use hot glue to attach pieces.

Print out images on white cardstock from Pinterest or Canva. The main image is the Wonka Bar and Golden Ticket. I added folded tin foil to make it look like a real candy bar. After that, any candy images will do just fine.

My son wanted a sucker, gummy bears, and hard candies. Attach images to the hat with hot glue. I let him help with placement of the candy pieces. (I did think to add real candy, but that would be too distracting for the kids and teachers).

That’s it. I was getting nervous about finding a purple jacket to complete his costume, but I was at Goodwill and found a Joker costume! What luck! I added a different ribbon bow tie. You could add a cane, but I have 3 boys and I know that just becomes another thing that they would use to fight with each other. Lol!

It rained on the day he wore it, and the hat held up just fine. In the future, I would have lamanated the candy pieces to give the hat more protection from getting wet.
Happy Book Character Day 🙂
